Hillsong Church’s rise and fall is the focus of the new FX documentary, “The Secrets of Hillsong.” The four-part series takes a look at scandals linked to one of the world’s most popular megachurches.
The series, which premieres May 19, is based on the original reporting on Hillsong by Vanity Fair journalists Alex French and Dan Adler.
About the Hillsong Documentary
“The Secrets of Hillsong” features interviews with former pastors Carl and Laura Lentz, who were fired from the church in 2020. The Lentzes were two of Hillsong’s most popular and influential pastors. Their ouster was a major blow to both the local New York City church they led and the global Hillsong Church.
The series also features interviews with other former Hillsong insiders, as well as journalists, historians, and policymakers. “The Secrets of Hillsong” reportedly paints a disturbing portrait of a church that is more interested in power and money than it is in serving its members.
The series gives an important look at the dark side of one of the world’s most powerful religious institutions.
Some of the scandals and controversies that “The Secrets of Hillsong” will explore include:
- The church’s handling of sexual abuse allegations against two of its pastors.
- The church’s use of celebrity culture to attract new members.
- The church’s lavish spending habits.
- The church’s toxic work culture.
- The church’s ties to scandal-plagued former lead pastor Brian Houston
“The Secrets of Hillsong” series is sure to spark much-needed conversations about the dangers of unchecked religious authority.
