New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ Likely to Explore Same Themes of Hope, Family and Friendship

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is the hotly anticipated sequel to 2018’s award-winning and inspiring “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” The new movie, second in the “Across the Spider-Verse” trilogy, is set to be released in theaters on June 2.

The second animated film in the series picks up pretty much where the 2018 film left off. That is, with Miles Morales continuing to get the hang of being Spider-Man. However, he will soon find himself facing a new threat from the multiverse: a powerful being known as The Spot. To defeat The Spot, Miles will need to team up with a new team of Spider-People from across the multiverse, including Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man 2099, and Miguel O’Hara.

As with part 1, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will likely explore themes of hope, friendship, and faith as the good guys team up to the villain in his tracks.

The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. The cast includes Shameik Moore (Miles Morlaes), Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy), Jake Johnson (Peter B. Parker), Issa Rae (Jessica Drew), and Oscar Isaac (Miguel O’Hara), among others.

Here’s How to Watch It

Theaters: Of course, the main way to watch “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” starting June 2 will be in theaters. You can actually watch it the day before its official release when you buy a ticket via fandango.com. You can also buy via presale at Cinemark. If you’re headed to a Cinemark theater in certain locations, you may be able to buy a limited edition “Super Ticket” for the June 1 showing of the new Spider-Man movie. The “Super Ticket” includes: a t-shirt, digital soundtrack, mini poster, and a large popcorn and drink. Get the full details at Cinemark.

Streaming: 2018’s first animated entry in the “Across the Spider-Verse” trilogy was released via Netflix. So it goes without saying that part 2 will also be released for streaming on Netflix. When it will be released to Netflix is the tricky part. It could take several months before we’re able to watch “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” on Netflix. Our guess is it will likely roll out in time for the holidays. Part two will also eventually be available for rental and purchase on other streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Redbox, and elsewhere.

Blu-ray and DVD: We have no firm idea of when you’ll be able to buy the “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” DVD or Blu-ray. But going by the release of part 1 to DVD, it will likely take several months after part 2’s release before it hits physical formats. Our guess is around September or October.

About the Movie

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is expected to be as big of a smash as part 1, if not bigger. The first film was praised for its innovative animation style, diverse cast, and heartwarming family-centered story. Spider-Verse Part 2 will likely ride that same wave and awe viewers with another impressive story. As with part 1, “Across the Spider-Verse” is also rated PG and is about 2 hours long.

Grab your tickets now to watch “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in theaters on June 1. Then head to Amazon to buy a Spider-Verse comic or grab the new “Illustrated Guide to the Spider-Verse”. Or, if you missed it last time, pick up the movie book for the first movie in the series.
